A child who receives the necessary speech and language skills while they are young has the greatest chance of SUCCESSFUL learning for the rest of their lives!

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive communication, and swallowing disorders in children.

Brain development in early childhood is a dynamic and rapid process that lays the foundation for a child’s cognitive, social, emotional, communication, and physical development throughout life. Identifying challenges and providing occupational therapy intervention during these early years is essential for maximizing independence and success within the learning environment.

Occupational therapists (OTs) work to assess, identify, and provide interventions for motor, visual perceptual, sensory processing, executive functioning, postural, and self care delays that impact a student’s ability to access and participate within their educational environment.

  • Speech is 75% intelligible
  • Ability to rhyme emerges

36-42 MONTHS

  • “Can you, would you?” requests
  • Understands colors
  • Understands basic kinship
  • Irregular past tense acquired
  • Use of phonological processes to simplify speech such as stopping (tun for sun) and cluster reduction (boo for blue). The use of syllable deletion (nana for banana) or final consonant deletion (ca for cat) is less common.

42-48 MONTHS

  • Can report on past events, predict and maintain interactions
  • Uses and understands when and how questions
  • Understands basic shapes
  • Use of conjunctions and, because to join sentences
  • Understands and uses size vocabulary big, small
  • Cluster reduction decreases

48-60 MONTHS

  • Knowledge of letter names and sounds emerge
  • Knowledge of numbers and counting emerges
  • Use of conjunctions when, so, if
  • Regular past tense -ed
  • Speech is 100% intelligible
  • Use of simplification processes stops, errors on /s/ /r/ /l/ and /th/may persist.

  • Traces basic lines and shapes
  • Cuts out a circle
  • Strings ½” beads following a shape pattern
  • Completes 3-piece inset puzzle

48-60 MONTHS

  • Able to oppose thumb to fingers
  • Copies basic shapes
  • Begins to write letters of name
  • Draws a person with 2 parts or a basic stick figure 
  • Cuts basic shapes (circle, square, diamond)
  • Strings small beads – can follow a sequence/pattern of shapes and colors
  • Completes 10-15 piece puzzle
  • Using 6 blocks, builds a pyramid and 3 steps from a model
